Abstract | This article is a book review on Adeline Yen Mah's autobiography, "Falling Leaves: The True Story of An Unwanted Chinese Daughter". In the autobiography, Mah recounts her childhood as the daughter of a wealthy industrialist, stepdaughter of a Eurasian beauty and sister of six siblings living at the height of Shanghai and Tianjin society. On closer scrutiny, the family is a study of the worst of Chinese traditions: among them, greed and the degradation of women. It is Mah's undying obsession with the emotional trauma of her childhood that gives "Falling Leaves" its riveting drive. |
