| Abstract | With the long-awaited election of 340 of the Selection Committee's (SC) 400 members by the Preparatory Committee in Beijing in November 1996, the process of forming the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government now can truly be described as "locked and tracking". According to Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office Director Lu Ping, the new body will hold its first meeting in Hong Kong on 15 November 1996. It will officially nominate candidates for chief executive from the current short list of eight. A final decision on the individual who will assume Hong Kong's top job will be made on 11 December 1996. |
