AbstractThis article introduces Qingdao, China. Qingdao, a Bavarian-like town, rose up for hard-headed economic and political reasons. Seeking coal and a strategic toehold on China's east coast, Germany wrested control of 150,000 hectares of Shandong province. The treaty of 1898 gave it control of the area for 99 years and the right to construct a fortified naval base on the peninsula.
