| Abstract | Despite ownership of a car being an impossible dream for the vast majority in China, it fails to lessen their fascination for everything about them and the local industry that produces them. Central government acknowledges the wide interest in cars and motoring, and - since the early 1980s - has responded by investing trillions of dollars importing vehicle production lines and supportive facilities. It designated car manufacturing as a high-growth area over the next five years, anticipating that it will become a pillar industry in the 21st century. |
