| Abstract | Governor Chris Patten returned to Hong Kong from the United Kingdom (UK) in late October 1996 after a visit officially described as "low key", but which featured a week-long blitz on the British media and important sections of the business community. Though he steered clear of the kind of headline-grabbing interventions which have agitated British opponents in the past, the governor's profile-raising approach seemed designed to enhance his chances of returning to UK politics following 1997's handover. |
