AbstractThere are three more clocks ticking away for three crucial events later in 1997 which will determine Hong Kong's future prosperity. The first is the path-breaking US-China Summit in October, which will be difficlult for either President Jiang Zemin or President Bill Clinton to put off. Another clock is ticking in Beijing for President Jiang in the form of the Communist Party Congress - the first since Deng's death - in October. The third clock ticking away is linked to these two October-November events. In Geneva, for the tortuous negotiations to get China into the World Trade Organisation by December or, more likely by May, 1998.
