| Abstract | The class act on the global shares stage in mid-October 1996 was the great surge on the markets of Shenzhen and Shanghai, which have been reporting combined turnover of more than 20 billion yuan a day for a week. That was three times the current daily volume in Hong Kong and it matches the 18 billion dollar a day seen at the peak of the 1993 bull rush. The Shenzhen A-share index has tripled in 1996 and its Shanghai counterpart has nearly doubled. The foreigners-only B-share market has only waddled way behind. |
