AbstractThis article is a book review on "China's Challenge" by Michael Yahuda. This book is one of the most recent of the countless academic and journalistic essays published in Hong Kong and abroad on the subject of the handover of the British colony to the People's Republic of China on July 1st, 1997. However, from the very start, this work claims to be very different from the others: its purpose is not to look at the change of sovereighty and its consequences from the point of view of Hong Kong and its people, but rather to measure the significance of this event for China by analysing the numerous challenges which Hong Kong's return poses for the Chinese government at a critical moment in its history.
