| Abstract | The Queen versus Tam Yuk-ha, a case the ruling of which hinged upon the interpretation of bilingual legislation, has sparked off debate in the legal profession. Soon afterwards, in Chan Fung-lan versus Lai Wai-chuen, it was alleged that a discrepancy existed between the English and the Chinese texts of a provision in legislation. This article seeks to discuss the statutory and judicial approaches to interpretation of bilingual legislation of Hong Kong, including the origin of the statutory rules. In the course of discussion, Canadian and South African experience will be drawn on. |
