AbstractThis study examines the job motivation of non-practising accountants in Hong Kong, and assesses the value of Vroom's Expectancy Theory (1964) in predicting the job effort of these accountants. It was found that non-practising accountants were motivated more by extrinsic than intrinsic rewards. Ways to improve their job motivation are also suggested. On the other hand, the present study provided additional evidence that Vroom's Expectancy Theory (1964) may neither be appropriate in predicting the job effort of non-practising accountants in particular nor that of accountants in general.
