| Abstract | Opera, a nameless wag once quipped, is "melodrama set to music." The opera Marco Polo, which opened the 25th Hong Kong Arts Festival in February 1997, is metaphysics and mysticism set to music - like many other works of the Chinese composer Tan Dun. Instead of just dramatizing the Italian explorer's life and travels, he and Welsh librettist Paul Griffiths created an odyssey in music, dance and drama, resonating on physical, spiritual and musical levels. |
