Abstract | Diamonds are mined in 19 countries and major producers are Australia, Zaire, Botswana, Russia, South Africa, Angola, and Namibia. Diamonds were first mined in India but production has decreased. In Asia, other producing countries include Indonesia and in China, mining is mainly in Liaoning, Shandong and Hunan provinces. Diamonds from different producing countries and mines differ in quality and quantity. However, rough sold by the Central Selling Organisation (CSO) is sorted according to shape, quality, colour and size, and then polished and sold to wholesalers and manufacturers and finally to retailers. Grading of diamonds is not related to its country of origin. The structure of diamond industry is featured in this article. |
