AbstractNormal or pathological grief among patients coming to the clinics of primary care doctors is often underdiagnosed and undertreated. If the doctor can detect the condition and provide appropriate management early, future development of physical and psychological pathologies may be prevented. Primary care doctors can render grief counselling themselves but can also solicit help from social workers, counsellors, chaplains and church workers. Different ways of grief management including anticipatory guidence, supportive psychotherapy, cognitive behavioral intervention and grief therapy are presented in some depth.
