| Abstract | The EU-Turkey Customs Union came into force on 1 January 1996, and Turkish import tariffs on most EU products were abolished. Before that, most Turkish exports to the EU had been duty-free for many years. With the abolition of EU quota restraints on Turkish textile products, more Hong Kong clothing manufacturers might consider setting up export-oriented production or subcontracting arrangements in Turkey. Meanwhile, reportedly, Turkey plans to impose quotas unilaterally on textile products from certain non-EU countries and territories, including Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Trade Department is seeking clarifications from the Turkish authority. |
