| Abstract | Annette Lu Hsiu-lien, a candidate for the opposition Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), snatched the post from the ruling Kuomintang (KMT). She choose Taipei Prison as the site for her acceptance speech after her victory in election. However, the issue of Taiwan's independence from China, which the DPP had long promoted, was absent from her election campaign. The DPP has been soft-peddling the independence question. |
