AbstractEnd stage renal failure can be successfully treated with dialysis and transplantation. However, these treatment modalities impose a heavy social and financial burden to the community. A more cost-effective way to deal with this problem is prevention, early detection and treatment of progressive renal disease, and this is an area in which the primary care physician will be able to play a major role. This review will summmarise the current status of the therapeutic strategies available for preventing the progression of renal failure with an emphasis on the role of the primary care physician.
