AbstractDuring his trip to Beijing, the United States vice President Al Gore helps build bridges between Washington and Beijing. Gore's trip also comes at a time when interest in China among politicians, the media and the public in America is at its highest since the Tiananmen crackdown of 1989. Fueling such attention is not only the campaign-financing allegations but also the return of Hong Kong to China in July 1997.
