| Abstract | More distressing news from the animal-ailment front. In 1996, fear of "mad cow" disease swept across Europe and forced beef sales to plummet. Now, an epidemic in Taiwan's hog population has caused a ban on pork exports and a huge drop in pork consumption on the island. It has also forced a massive pig cull and the closure of the island's zoos. But does foot-and-mouth (also known as hoof-and-mouth) disease pose a threat to humans? A brief explanation of the disease is given in this article. |
