| Abstract | ASEAN's collective sigh of relief was almost audible. China had just announced it was withdrawing an oil rig from Gulf of Tonkin waters claimed by the association's newest memeber, Vietnam. And Beijing and Hanoi planned to hold meetings in the near future to allocate resources in other parts of the South China Sea where they have overlapping claims. The dispute, said the Chinese Foreign Ministry, would be "resolved through consultation in the spirit of friendliness and equality." Its spokesman added that the vessel had been withdrawn because it had completed its mission, not from any pressure. Still, his words were music to diplomatic ears from Bangkok to Jakarta. |
