Abstract | Are the days of spectacular export growth for East Asia's "Little Dragons" over? The 1996 slowdown in export performance from Singapore to Korea, including Hong Kong, certainly poses these questions, despite the chorus of both positive and whistling-in-the-dark predictions about an early rebound of exports in 1997. Meanwhile there are signs Hong Kong, perhaps least affected of all the Asian economies, is turning to some extent to offshore trade to help sustain itself. It does not improve the export volume figures but it is earning money for the territory. Long-term remedies most frequently advocated now for theser varied monthly performances are listed in this article. |
