Abstract | Deng liked his croissants, but otherwise had simple tastes. His children's appetities are not quite so restrained. All five have capitalized on their top-of-the-line connections. The family is thought to have built a business empire, but they carefully guard information about it. Their influence has weakened over the past few years along with Deng's health. With his death, they are more vulnerable to accusations that they unfairly profited from their status. But they are still in a very privileged position, and they are not likely to be dislodged quickly or easily. |
