Abstract | The airing of 2.28 poses a potential danger. Mr Wei Wou, who co-authored one of the most detailed accounts of the episode, fears that the recent declaration of a commemorative holiday would "create a new memory of hatred" toward China - and, indeed, all things linked with the mainland. That would be unfortunate, placing further stress on the already difficult cross-strait relationship that is so pivotal to stability in all East Asia. As Taiwan's leaders try to put behind them a historical trauma, they must guard against efforts to steer the emotive issue in that unproductive and peril-fraught direction. |
