Abstract | Aromatherapists use the distilled essence of plants to treat a whole range of problems, from acne to whooping cough. The method of application varies, from rubbing the oil into the affected area, releasing it into the air through candle-powered burners, adding drops to bath water and even gargling it in diluted solutions. But medical doctors are skeptical. Says a specialist at Hong Kong's Adventist Hospital, aromatherapy is not a bad thing to do, but he would never use it as a medical mainstay. Essential oils can be applied to energize or soothe but must be used with caution. |
