Is Part OfCTC news ; v.3, no.2, 20 Jan 1997, p.1-3.
AbstractChina has seen another booming year of steady growth in both public and competitive telecom infrastructures in 1996. In the first year of the ambitious Ninth Five-Year Plan (1996-2000), not only did Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications (MPT) accomplish its cautiously projected targets but also got better results in 1996 than in 1995. MPT's major accomplishments, as shown in Exhibit One in this article, include a total switching capacity of 101.86 million installed lines, a total of 60.67 million telephone service subscribers (including both wired and wireless), and a national teledensity of 6.2%. At the same time, the competitive telecom builders headed by China Unicom have also significantly increased the overall capacity of China's telecom infrastructure by installing transmission and switching lines for wired and wireless services in the urban areas.
