AbstractThe author, who is the chairman of the Federation of Hong Kong Industries, believes Hong Kong is and will remain an economic rather than a political city and the economy will be the foundation upon which our future success rests. This requires a strong manufacturing sector to ensure the territory's competitiveness in world markets. Hong Kong is already an attractive location for industry and business because it operates under the rule of law, is committed to free trade, has a well developed transport network and an excellent telecommunications system as well as offering a very advanced level of financial services. However, while such factors will remain important to Hong Kong, those in government, industry and academia need to work together to accelerate the development of technology-intensive, value-added manufacturing upon which the territory's competitiveness also depends.
