AbstractIn the absence of direct transport links, Taiwan's nearly $20 billion annual trade with the mainland has mostly passed through the British-run territory. But with the handover, Taiwan will have de facto direct links with China anyway. In early 1997, Chinese and Taiwan shipping officials hammered out a deal that establishes the first direct cross-strait maritime connections since 1949. The scheme is limited, allowing only the transshipment of goods through Taiwan's southern port city of Kaohsiung by foreign-registered vessels to and from just two southern Chinese ports - Xiamen and Fuzhou.
