AbstractThe world's grand hotels have an irresistible glamour deeply ingrained in their rich history. A cut above the ubiquity of high-rise hotels with soaring atria and uniform decor, this clutch of old-age pensions survives with dignity. Like the society queens they once were, they have had a face lift or two, but have retained their unique ambience and architecture, and the philosophy that good service is preferable to glitz. The author has visited the hotels in Bombay, Bangkok, Singapore, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Philippines, India, Vietnam, Malaysia and Macau to look for nostalgia. This article describes what she has discovered.
