AbstractAstronauts aboard the Shuttle Columbia mission have begun using a PictureTel videoconferencing system to visually communicate with scientists and other NASA personnel on Earth. This first mission in October 1995 marked the first time two-way digital videoconferencing has ever been used on a space shuttle. For the first time, mission control teams are working closely with astronauts in an interactive, face-to-face environment.
