Abstract | The founder and chairman of the Acer Group in Taiwan, Stan Shih, has seen his computer company's profits dip in the first half of 1996 after two impressively profitable years. The question Shih, 51 , is mulling is how to entice the world's legions of technophobes to buy a computer. Acer has laid plans to introduce a line of stripped-down, easy-to-use computers, dubbed Acer-Basic. The product is Acer's answer to so-called "network computers" (NCs), which are limited-function machines designed for specific purposes, like surfing the Internet. |
