AbstractWhen he returns to Beijing, China's President Jiang Zemin could look back on one of the more successful diplomatic swings through Asia by a Chinese leader in many years - and the first ever for a Chinese president in India. The success was not measured so much in the business deals concluded, though there were some, or in progress made in resolving territorial disputes, so much as in establishing a firmer foundation of trust with neighboring countries. By shoring up relations with its neighbors, Beijing achieves several key objectives. It paves the way for greater global economic ties, which supports China's top priority, stable and sustained domestic economic development. The diplomatic offensive is multi-pronged.
