AbstractPerhaps the most watched of the so-called bilaterals was the 85-minute session on 24 November 1996 between the United States (US) President Bill Clinton and his Chinese counterpart Jiang Zemin in the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum meetings. The Clinton-Jiang summit marked a turning point in Sino-U.S. relations. However, for all the new optimism, significant stumbling blocks lie ahead for both sides. Clinton raised the issue of Hong Kong, which reverts to Chinese sovereignty in July 1997. Any perceived mishandling of Hong Kong by Beijing - particularly on the human rights front - may lead to renewed tension with Washington. Other issues in relation to the Sino-American relations are covered in this article.
