AbstractEver since economic and trade relations between the People's Republic of China and Taiwan began to thaw in the mid-1980s, the powers of mutual attraction between the two economies have become increasingly clear, underlining the artificial character of the mutual indifference which used to be the rule. Public debate on cross-strait economic relations began in earnest in 1992, when Taiwanese exports to the mainland first exceeded one billion US dollars. In their view "Greater China" is rooted in economic complementarity, with Taiwan and Hong Kong providing the technical and financial where-withal, and the mainland contributing the primary resources and labour.
