| Abstract | Since the 139 GSM (global system for mobile communications) digital mobile phone networks in 15 provinces were inter-connected for roaming on 1 January 1996, eight more provinces and regions gained access to the inter-connected network. They are Jilin, Henan,Anhui, Hunan, Jiangxi, Sichuan, Yunnan and Ningxia. The remaining seven provinces and regions will gain access to the network before 1996. By the end of 1996, the GSM digital mobile phone network will cover 270 cities and part of their suburban area. By the end of 1997, the 139 GSM digital mobile phone network will cover all cities above county level and some economically developed townships in east and central China as well as all prefectural cities and some economically developed counties in western part of the country. |
