| Abstract | GSM (global system for mobile communications) digital mobile phone networks in Chengdu and Chongqing went into operation on 17 May 1996. After completion of the first-phase construction, three GSM exchanges were established in Chengdu, Chongqing and Zigong with 129 base stations and 5,096 channels capable of accommodating 118,000 subscribers. GSM network in Zigong is scheduled to be operational in July 1996. In the Ninth Five-Year Plan period (1996-2000), three more exchanges will be established in Mianyang, Leshan and Nanchong to boost the capacity of GSM system in Sichuan province to 250,000-300,000 subscribers. |
