AbstractTraffic-gridlocked Shanghai is again going underground in a bid to ease continually deteriorating road congestion. Work on a second subway, a five-year project financed by foreign loans, is now under way. It will link Puxi in the west of the city with Pudong in the east. Road congestion will also be relieved from November 1996 with the opening of Shanghai's third Huangpu River crossing, the Yan'an Road East Tunnel, which runs parallel to a sister tunnel 100 meters upriver. Meanwhile, the design of the terminal building for the first phase of the Pudong International Airport has been completed. The terminal is expectd to handle 20 million passengers a year when the first phase is completed in 1999. More constructions built to ease the traffic congestion in Shanghai are introduced in this article.
