| Abstract | China has called on Japan not to create "any new disturbances" in the region around the Diaoyu Islands and declares that "the real threat" in the Asia-Pacific region "is Japan." The statement calling on Japan not to create any new disturbances came from Foreign Ministry spokesman of China Shen Guofang at a press briefing following the Japanese coast guard action. Shen also made a veiled criticism of an accord between Japan and the United States that gave the two sides the right to intervene if there is any trouble around Japan. Shen made the statement a day before Chinese Vice-Premier and Foreign Minister Qian Qichen and his Japanese counterpart, Yukihiko Ikeda, met in New York to review bilateral relations. The Diaoyu Islands issue was one of the major topics discussed by the two sides. |
