AbstractItalian sportswear manufacturer Fila Sport strode into Hong Kong in November 1996 to open the doors of its new megastore in Tsim Sha Tsui. With the top brass was one of the brand's most important endorsers - recently retired Argentinian tennis star Gabriella Sabatini. Fila, founded in Biella as a family-run textiles firm in 1926, diversified into sportswear in the 1970s. It came to prominence in Europe when its labels were paraded on the football terraces of Britain and Italy throughout the 1980s by fans prepared to fork out up to 120 pounds for a sweater. Lacoste, Sergio Tacchini and Ellesse were three rivals able to sell apparel at equaly ritzy prices.
