Abstract | This article introduces the elegant building, on Garden Road, Hong Kong Island. Its appearance has not appreciably changed since it was built in 1916. Known then as the Helena May Institute, it was built as a hostel "for working women of moderate means." The idea, and the quotation, originated with Lady Helena May, the wife of Sir Henry May, then governor of Hong Kong. |
