AbstractOpinion surveys seem to be dominating the news during the selection process for the chief executive of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The author discovers the polls are full of ambiguities. Of the many elements which have confused the race for the chief executive, none is less clear than the role of public opinion. Strictly speaking, within the rules of this election by the 400 members of the Selection Committee, public opinion counts for nothing.
