AbstractThis article describes China's computer industry over the 40 years before 1996. China's first computing machine (ENIAC) was completed successfully in 1945 and put into operation on 15 Febrary 1946. At that time, China, recovering from the damages of the Japanese invasion and at the verge of civil war, had no resources to spare for scientific research. The premier Mr Zhou En Lai set an ambitious plan called "The Twelve-year plan on the development of Science and Technology." The plan included the research of atomic energy, air-plan, rocket science, resources extraction, and so on.
