AbstractThe Urban Council's (Urbco) Ko Shan Theatre in To Kwa Wan in Hong Kong opened in 1983. In its first incarnation, as a 3,000-seat open-air venue in the midst of the Ko Shan Park, it failed to draw the crowds - the design was ill-suited to Hong Kong's own drama, the weather. In 1994, tired of flagging sales and one-night stands from bands of dubious talent, Urbco called in architects Kwan & Associates to refashion the theatre into a leading cultural venue.
