AbstractHong Kong is the world's second-largest film exporter and third-largest film producer behind the United States and India, yet with the local industry in a tail-spin this may well not last for long. In 1993, the industry churned out 234 films, in 1995 figure had plummeted to 150, while in 1996 the industry expects to produce barely more than 100 films. This downturn has kicked in hard, with box office takings for Hong Kong films falling from $1.24 billion in 1992 to $776 million in 1995. Hong Kong is one of the few countries in the world where indigenous films are more successful than imports. Ominously for the local industry, between 1992-95, the box office for local productions dropped from 79% to 57%, with industry insiders wondering whether 1996 will see, for the first time, foreign films out-perform local productions.
