Abstract | The opening of the social season was marked, some would say symbolically, by a gala evening for the Chinese Charity Operation Concern, which provides free medical services to the mainland's physically disabled. Since its founding in 1993, Operation Concern has undertaken eight trips to China, most of them to remote rural areas, where advanced medical facilities are not readily available. The volunteers also train local medical workers so that they can carry on after the Hong Kong team has left. With 50 million physically disabled people in China, there can never be enough help in this area. |
