AbstractThis article is a speech by the president of the Hong Kong Institute of Engineers, Ir Barry Stubbings. He introduces the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers which was modelled in the early 1970's, and drew for a large part quite maturally on the models of the United Kingdom professional institutions. Their structure is, however, very different from the British Institutions in that, from the outset they have been a multi-disciplinary Institution. In this respect it is also different from the learned Societies in America and other countries. It is, though, a model that has been adapted by many of the Institutions, prticularly in the emerging countries of the Asia pacific region.
