Abstract'Ghost fishing' was occurring on a large scale in Hoi Ha Wan. This term means that lost fishing gear, especially nets, continues to catch, and kill, fish and marine life long after it was abandoned. A 'ghostbusting' team is formed of the Agriculture and Fisheries Department (AFD), the World Wide Fund, two local dive clubs, the Marine Conservation Society and local fishermen from Kat O Chau. 'Operation Ghostbuster' kicked off on May 13 1995, when AFD divers located and buoyed 13 ghost fishing nets within Hoi Ha Wan. The results were better, or rather worse, than anyone had anticipated with 28 large-cane baskets filled with abandoned nets. About 5,600 metres of net was removed from the bay that day.
