Abstract | According to Mike Wilde, Chief Architect of Architectural Services Department (Arch. SD), more and more government buildings are purpose-built and have their own distinctive character. The Arch. SD does its best to take into consideration the needs of individual users. During the financial year 1994, the Department had over 600 projects under design and construction. These ranged from simple rest gardens and camping sites to cultural centres, museums, markets, schools and regional hospitals and were valued at $40 billion. In addition, the value of subvented projects monitored by the Arch. SD amounted to over $20 billion. According to Arch. SD's Senior Property Services Manager, Lam Sair-ling, one of the most satisfying aspects of their work is in preserving some examples of Hong Kong's architectural heritage for the next generation. |
