| Abstract | While growth in Hong Kong's throughput has dropped to single figures, ports on the mainland are dealing with more customers by the day. Growth surged in China's ports on the Pearl River Delta in the first half of 1996 while the neighbouring Hong Kong port saw percentage increase in throughput drop into single digits. Shipping industry sources say the disparity in growth rates by no means indicates the south China ports are replacing Hong Kong. Instead, the Chinese ports Yantian and Shekou are becoming useful alternatives to Hong Kong and will help meet burgeoning demand in the region. |
