Abstract | Lobbying hardest to assume the premiership, Li Rui-huan Chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, at a relatively young 62 is getting a surprisingly sympathetic hearing. Among his backers: retiring Premier Li Peng and the head of the National People's Congress, Qiao Shi. Both see Li's rise as an opportunity to snatch some power from President Jiang Zemin and his Jiangsu (Shanghai) faction and pressure him to give up the presidency. |
