| Abstract | Hong Kong's trade issue has become a matter of discussion in this article. Apart from the worry on the overall trade performance due to the slow trade growth during the first half-year, 1996, there are even more concerns expressed on whether Hong Kong can maintain its status as a trading centre. The trading status of Hong Kong is in fact well established. It is one of the most important entrepots of the world and a centre for offshore trade & world trade. However, following changes that have taken place, Hong Kong is facing with rising challenges. These factors include the historic return of Hong Kong's sovereignty to China, China's better transportation infrastructure for foreign trade and a breakthrough in corss-strait communications. Whether Hong Kong can maintain its role depends on how it deals with these challenges. |
