AbstractConfucianism is an influential intellectual discourse in China, Japan, Vietnam, South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore, Hong Kong, and North Korea. It has formed the culture and tradition of the region for thousands of years. Now the region is considered as one of the most dynamic in the world. These countries are very different in terms of population, climate, and geography, but they share the same cultural heritage - Confucianism. It is therefore not unreasonable to postulate that their economic success may in some ways be attributable to this common heritage. The purposes of this article are to provide a systematic account of the main administrative ideas in Confucianism; an evaluation of how Confucian concepts have been reinterpreted and adapted when East Asian countries have faced pressures for renovation in development; and an evaluation of the influences of adapted, reinterpreted Confucian ideas on these East Asian countries.
